Windshield Replacement and ADAS Calibration: What to Ask

Camera and sensor procedures depend on your vehicle and the repair performed.

By ABAS Auto Repair & Collision · Pantego, TX

General driver information, not a diagnosis. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If braking, steering or visibility is unsafe, stop safely and arrange assistance.

Glass damage is vehicle-specific

Crack size, location, contamination and damage to the glass layers can influence repairability. Damage in the driver’s sight line or near an edge needs professional evaluation. Ask whether repair or replacement is suitable rather than assuming every chip can be filled. Keep visibility and structural condition in mind, not only appearance.

When calibration may be required

Some driver-assistance systems use a windshield-mounted camera; others depend on sensors elsewhere on the vehicle. Windshield work, collision repairs, alignment or changes in sensor position may trigger manufacturer-required calibration. A warning light is not the only indication that a procedure is required. Requirements differ by make, model, year and operation.

Questions for the repair plan

Ask which manufacturer procedures apply, whether pre- and post-repair scans are needed and whether calibration is included. Confirm glass and component compatibility for the vehicle. Calibration does not make a driver-assistance system autonomous: drivers still need to follow the owner’s manual and remain responsible for safe operation.

Before your appointment

  • Provide the exact year, make and model.
  • Mention cameras or driver-assistance features.
  • Ask about required scans and calibration in the written scope.
