Hail Damage and Dents: When Can Paintless Dent Repair Help?
Paint condition, dent shape and access determine whether PDR is suitable.

General driver information, not a diagnosis. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If braking, steering or visibility is unsafe, stop safely and arrange assistance.
What makes a dent a PDR candidate?
Paintless dent repair reshapes suitable dents while preserving the existing finish. Intact paint, panel access, dent depth and whether metal has stretched affect suitability. A sharp crease, damaged paint or structural damage may need a different repair method. A photograph helps initial discussion but does not replace inspecting the panel.
Hail damage needs a whole-vehicle check
Inspecting only the most visible dents can miss damage to trim, glass or other panels. An estimate should identify affected areas and the intended repair method. PDR and conventional bodywork can both be appropriate on the same vehicle. Do not assume every hail claim or every dent qualifies for one process.
Preparing an estimate request
Send your year, make, model, a wide photo of each affected area and close-ups in good light. Explain whether paint is cracked or prior repairs exist. Keep insurance coverage questions separate from the repair method: this guide does not claim membership in any insurer’s approved network. ABAS can discuss the vehicle’s damage before quoting.
Before your appointment
- Photograph affected panels in clear light.
- Mention cracked paint or previous repairs.
- Ask which dents need conventional repair.
