Bumper Scratches, Paint Chips and Collision Estimates

A cosmetic mark and hidden collision damage can require very different repairs.

General driver information, not a diagnosis. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If braking, steering or visibility is unsafe, stop safely and arrange assistance.

Why small-looking damage can need inspection

A bumper cover can conceal mounting damage, energy-absorbing parts or sensors. Following an impact, inspect more than the visible scratch. Panel fit, warning lights and changes in vehicle behavior matter. A fender-bender estimate based only on one photo can miss work that becomes visible during inspection.

Touch-up, refinishing or replacement

The depth and extent of paint damage influence the approach. A surface mark differs from damage through the paint into the panel. Color matching, preparation, repair area and blending adjacent panels may affect refinishing. Rust and peeling clear coat require assessment rather than a promise that polishing or a scratch remover will restore the finish.

Comparing repair quotes

Ask whether each quote includes parts, preparation, paint materials, labor, scans and any required calibration. A bumper scratch price is not comparable to a full collision-repair price. ABAS provides vehicle-specific estimates; this guide does not publish invented starting prices or insurer-network approvals. Confirm coverage and deductible questions directly with your insurer.

Before your appointment

  • Share wide and close-up damage photos.
  • Mention warning lights after the impact.
  • Compare written scope, not only the final total.
