Texas Vehicle Inspections: What Arlington and Pantego Drivers Should Check

Safety-inspection and emissions-testing requirements are not the same.

By ABAS Auto Repair & Collision · Pantego, TX

General driver information, not a diagnosis. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If braking, steering or visibility is unsafe, stop safely and arrange assistance.

What changed in Texas?

Texas ended the registration safety-inspection requirement for most non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. This did not remove every inspection obligation. Commercial vehicles remain subject to safety-inspection requirements, and emissions testing continues for qualifying vehicles in designated counties. Check the Texas DPS program guidance for your vehicle before registration.

Tarrant County and emissions testing

Arlington and Pantego are in Tarrant County, one of the counties covered by Texas emissions-testing requirements. Eligibility depends on vehicle details and exemptions; do not assume every vehicle must take the same test. Confirm the current requirement using official guidance and your registration information before arranging an appointment.

Registration inspection versus pre-purchase inspection

A pre-purchase inspection is a separate evaluation of a used vehicle’s condition; it does not replace an emissions test or guarantee future reliability. When calling ABAS, explain which inspection you need and provide the vehicle’s year, fuel type and registration county. Ask the shop to confirm appointment availability and the applicable test.

Before your appointment

  • Check official rules for your vehicle.
  • Provide registration county and fuel type.
  • Distinguish emissions testing from a used-car inspection.
