Cold Heater, Wet Floor or a Defroster That Won’t Clear
Visibility issues and cabin moisture deserve more than a guess about the heater core.

General driver information, not a diagnosis. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If braking, steering or visibility is unsafe, stop safely and arrange assistance.
Protect visibility first
If the windshield will not clear, stop somewhere safe rather than driving with impaired visibility. Follow the vehicle’s defrost instructions. Heating, A/C dehumidification, air direction and fan speed work together on many vehicles. A setting that works on one car may not be appropriate for another.
Cold air and unequal temperatures
Coolant temperature, coolant level, air-distribution doors, controls and airflow can affect cabin heat. Unequal left and right temperatures on a dual-zone system do not prove an actuator has failed. A thermostat stuck open can affect warm-up, but temperature checks are needed before replacement. Report engine-temperature behavior alongside the cabin complaint.
Wet carpet and unusual smells
Water intrusion can originate at body seals, drains or the A/C drain path; coolant leakage is another possibility. A sweet smell, fogging or damp carpet deserves inspection. Musty A/C odors are not proof of mold or a failed evaporator. Avoid masking persistent dampness with fragrance: finding the moisture source is the useful next step.
Before your appointment
- Do not drive with obstructed visibility.
- Note whether moisture follows rain or A/C use.
- Report temperature differences between vents.
